FYI - Useful Information

Did you know?

  • The average daily urine output is 1.5 liters.
  • Heartburn may also cause pain between the shoulder blades.
  • Your brain needs about 500g of carbohydrates daily to function properly.
  • Cholesterol is a steroid.
  • Cholesterol is found only in animal products (red meat, cheese, dairy, poultry, etc) and can contribute to heart disease. Your total daily intake of cholesterol should be under 300mg.

Heat or Ice?

The age old question most people don't have the answer to is when to use heat and ice. The easiest way to determine if you need heat or ice is this: use ice when the injury has just happened (during the first 24 hours) or during a flare-up of an old injury. If you put heat on an acute injury, it will cause more swelling and take longer to heal. Heat should be used after a couple of days to help reduce pain and decrease the chances of muscle spasm. If the injury is chronic and has been around for a while, constant heat and stretching will reduce flare-ups.

Guidelines:
ICE
Use a small gel pack that has been kept in the freezer. Wrap it in a face cloth or small towel, never put ice directly on your skin. Ice for 10 minutes, then repeat after 20 minutes. Do this 3 times a day.

Gel Packs can be found in most pharmacies (cheapest is Wal*Mart).

HEAT
Using a microwaveable heating pad, apply heat for 20-30 minutes 3 times a day. The heat can be placed directly on the skin as long as it isn't too hot. Heat can be kept on the area for a while longer than ice. The body is more willing to accept heat than cold.

Microwaveable heating pads can be found in most pharmacies or department stores.

Helpful Hint:

When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters easily and pain free.

Why Water is Good For You

Since our bodies are made up of over 75% water, it is extremely important to drink a lot of water. Keeping yourself hydrated will let your body work at its peak. Muscles will function properly without fatiguing as easily; your skin will become more hydrated, looking healthier; you will decrease the chance of headaches and tension; the excess water will help to flush out toxins and waste; the body will also respond better to massage treatments if they are fully hydrated. Muscles get sort of "dried out" in a sense if they don't get enough water, this ends up causing tension and pain when stress arises. Ideally you should be drinking 6-8 oz. glasses of water daily. If you like to drink cold water, keep a pitcher in the fridge, that way there's always a cold drink there when you need one. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink; you feel thirsty because your body is telling you that it is already dehydrated. Drinking throughout the day will eliminate this feeling of thirst.

Sleep Disturbances

Have you ever wondered why you wake up at the same hour night after night, or get a lousy feeling at the same time every day? Our body is made up of different "meridians" or human energy fields. Each one of these meridians corresponds directly with a specific body organ. Each organ is more predominant at a certain time of the day, which might explain why you wake up at 3 o'clock every morning (liver or lung disorder). Below you will find a chart that outlines the specific times of the organs. See your doctor if you suspect a problem.

1am - 3am Liver
3am - 5am Lung
5am - 7am Large Intestine
7am - 9am Stomach
9am - 11am Spleen/Pancreas
11am - 1pm Heart
1pm - 3pm Small Intestine
3pm - 5pm Bladder
5pm - 7pm Kidney
7pm - 9pm Heart (constrictor/pericardium)
9pm - 11pm Triple Burner (tongue/ear/other pain)
11pm - 1am Gal bladder

Massage Therapy is not only for people with injuries. It is useful to relieve stress, decrease muscle tension, and relieve pain brought on by postural imbalances. Inquire about your condition today.
